Department for Education clarifies plans for citizenship A levels

Before Christmas, we asked the Department for Education to confirm that the omission of citizenship from their A level consultation was not an indication that it was being dropped quietly. We're pleased to say they have confirmed that.

Responding to the DfE's New A levels subject content consultation, we expressed concern that citizenship was not included.

In particular, we wanted to know why the citizenship subject community had not been consulted so far and asked for reassurance that it would be consulted in due course.

The DfE's reply reiterates their intention to review 'other subjects', but goes further by referring to citizenship explicitly. It also commits to consulting on any changes:

'The only subjects that will be reformed to become linear for 2015 are the subjects included in this consultation. All other A level subjects will be reformed in due course. Ofqual is considering the process and timetable for reforming these subjects, including citizenship, and will consult on the changes to these subjects as part of the reform process [our emphasis]'.
Although there is no explicit commitment to consult the subject community, we infer that intention and shall remind them of it if necessary when the time comes. Share
