Introduction to Education for Democratic Citizenship (incorporating the DCSF Standards certification)
This Birkbeck University of London distance learning module, part of the Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) in Education for Democratic Citizenship, incorporates the DCSF Standards for the certification of the teaching of citizenship (www.dcsf.gov.uk/citizenship).
Students who successfully complete the module will receive a certificate as evidence that they have achieved the DCSF certification; they will also have gained 30 CATS (Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme) points towards either a PG Cert in Education for Democratic Citizenship or an MSc in Citizenship Studies*.
The module allows teachers to study at a time and place of their choosing, and to work their own way through the content, supported by a personal tutor throughout. Three contact days will be offered at Birkbeck, University of London. These are not obligatory but they are recommended.
Candidates wishing to enrol in the module will firstly need to apply for entry into the PG Cert in Education for Democratic Citizenship programme. The programme is open to school-based citizenship teachers at primary, secondary and post-16 levels.
The Introduction to Education for Democratic Citizenship module fees are fully subsidised by the DCSF. Teachers should ideally have at least two years of teaching experience and QTS status to attract the DCSF subsidy. Teachers in independent schools may apply but will not qualify for the subsidy.
The course is delivered by Birkbeck University of London in co-operation with Citizenship Foundation staff.
A more detailed description of the module along with the DCSF Standards can be found in the documents on the right of this page.
*This programme will be offered for the first time in the 2008-09 academic year, subject to final approval.
