Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

We offer bespoke training and support for schools, consortia and local authorities to enable them to deliver citizenship effectively and meet the requirements of the curriculum.

We have over twenty years' experience in the field of citizenship education, in which time we have developed a range of high-quality resources and projects that use practical, easy to follow approaches to teaching the subject.

Who is the training for?

  • Citizenship teachers
  • Heads of Citizenship/Citizenship Co-ordinators
  • Local Authority Advisors (to host sessions for schools).

We offer training and support to mainstream schools, special schools and pupil referral units in the state and independent sectors.

What format does it follow?

The training and support offered can take a range of formats, including:

  • A whole/half day or twilight training session for all staff, staff delivering citizenship or a department;
  • A whole/half day of one-to-one support for a citizenship co-ordinator or head of department;
  • A whole/half day of support for a department;
  • A one hour surgery session to discuss any particular issues the school is facing (usually arranged via local authorities).

Other formats can be discussed on request.

What does it cover?

The training and support offered by the Citizenship Foundation is bespoke to fit the needs of the school and teaching staff. Some exemplar training topics include:

  • The nature and purpose of citizenship education;
  • What makes a good citizenship lesson;
  • Specific topic areas (eg right and responsibilities, law, politics, economics);
  • Assessment for learning (eg using exemplification of standards and level descriptions);
  • Teaching and assessing formal qualifications.

Support will vary in nature, but may help teachers with:

  • Selecting relevant high quality materials to use for teaching;
  • Developing schemes of work and lesson plans;
  • Developing content for drop down days;
  • Practical approaches to assessment embedded in learning.
